Narendra Modi was born on September 8, 8, in a family of groceries in Bhadanagar in Mehsana district, Bombay state (now Gujarat). His father's name is Late Damodardas Mulchand Modi and mother's name is Hiraben Modi and the couple has six children, the third of six. In his childhood, Modi helped his father sell tea at Vadnagar railway station and later with his brother run a tea stall at a bus terminus.

He completed his high school education in Vadnagar in 1966. At the age of 5, he joined the State Volunteer Association (RSS). He did not want to get married so he left home at the age of 17 and for the next two years he traveled all over the country. In her interview, she stated that during these two years she went to several monasteries established by Swami Vivekananda. Modi then returned to Vadnagar and after a while he returned to Ahmedabad.
